Hello again everyone! This is the antique French mirror my mum bought at Ardingly Antique Fair on Tuesday.
French pickled mirror...
I love very old mirrors with the original old mercury glass. I have many in my home. I think the only mirror that isn't really old and flawed is in one bathroom. My friend hates old mirrors. She's into this thing about spirits. When people replace the mirror in the lovely old frames it ruins the whole look...that's my opinion. Your Mum's mirror is wonderful...I'm sure she'll love it even more as time goes by.Kathy
What a beautiful mirror! You're absolutely right -- it would be a crime to replace the old mercury glass or regild. And it was very nice of you and your husband to come help her hang it. It was a great buy, too, and that always makes it sweeter!Mary
Hi Sophie,Your mums mirror is beautiful. I love old mirrors too. From your comments in a previous post about the pretty bed that got away, the same happened to me with a mirror in a charity shop. I spotted one in the window and wanted it straight away but they were closed for a stock take. Of course when I went back it was sold. I was kicking myself for missing out. But fate stepped in and last Christmas I found an identical mirror in an antique shop - I even wondered if it was the same mirror. I had to pay twice as much for it but wasn't going to let this one get away. It is the cherub one I showed in a previous post, so don't give up hope, you may find another blue bed.
oh what a steal, gorgeous, and I am with you Sophie must keep the aged look it tells a story, if you want new buy new. Can't wait for the next instalment.Karaxx
What a gorgeous mirror and it looks great over the fireplace. Congratulations! I have nominated you for the Blogger Reflection Award...read more on my page.Marie x
yep, I'm with you on keeping the spotted glass. . .my daughter inherited my Antique white bedroom set and it has two beautiful mirrors all splotchy and spotted~(at five she has good taste as she loves them too!!)
Sophie,I love your mum's new mirror. I would have probably bought it too.I seem to keep buying them.I love when you share your finds with us.Hope you had a nice weekend.Rosemary
Evening! Lovely old mirror -- and just so right for that spot! Certainly a case of "meant-to-be"! And very kind of your DH to put it up on the wall -- plaster walls can be really tricky! And a bargain too! How about adding some lovely old brass candlesticks or a long low cachepot filled with roses on the mantel? Time to toast the whole successful expedition to the antique fair with champagne!Cheers! Jan x at Rosemary Cottage
What a gorgeous old mirror...I love it, So much charm!
Your Mum's mirror is gorgeous. I totally agree that they're so much nicer when they are aged. We often have new mirrors made for clients at work and deliberately age them because it just looks so much better. We actually did a hairdressing room for a very wealthy client that was almost totally lined in mirrors all with age marks. It looked fantastic.
came upon your blog and guess we share a few interests. I don't think i really know much about interior designing and my tastes really poor, but some things just click...
Very nice mirror . It is so charming !!I 'm glad to have found your blog .
I love old mirrors that are as you described as 'pickled and mottled with age spots'. Your Mum's mirror was a wonderful find & looks wonderful hanging above the fireplace.
Beautiful mirror, Sophie! I have a thing for mirrors too & always lookout for them. Your mom's mirror is just stunning there over the fireplace. I love it!Rhoda
Such a beautiful piece. It is so lovely as is with all of its history!Karla
Beautiful mirror and yes I love that old speckled look. Remember the Feng Shui craze a few tears back (sorry about the word "Craze" but I'm sure you know what I mean) second hand / mottled mirrors were bad luck.
That mirror! The chandelier! That gorgeous molding! That is a breathtaking room.
Your home is very warm and inviting. Thank you for sharing it. I really enjoyed your blog!
Beautiful mirror! I love mirrors too and to find one with the old mercury glass still in it would be a dream!Manuela
Beautiful mirror!!! I love the character of old mirrors and their frames - something you don't get with new ones.Kim x
Sophie, I found that filing cabinet on the side of the road covered in 70's green and orange wallpaper. I stripped it off and sanded it, just used regular interior paint to paint it. It's solid wood, so I'm not sure what paint you might want to use on a metal bed. My mother in law did that once, I think she used a paint sprayer though.
What a beautiful old mirror. I think old mirrors should be left just as they are...beautifully aged. It sounds like you & your mom had fun together. Hopefully one day I can visit Ardingly Antique Fair!
It looks beautiful. Good for your Tom for being a handy guy! Your mother will enjoy this for a long time. I agree with you~I love some age on it~makes it all the better.

The Mirror Is Wonderful, Dont change a thing. Your photos are so Wonderful. Jamie
Do you appear older when you look into an old mirror? You husband deserves a peck on the cheed for hanging that!
The mirror is gorgeous......I see the chandelier "addiction" runs in the family! LOL
The mirror is stunning - probably from around 1830 or '40 with its original mercury glass. And only £150 - what a deal/(steal!). I too don't like things that have been restored or over-restored. The mirror is perfect as is!
Gorgeous mirror! I love the aged look of the old glass.I've been away for awhile, so I'm trying to catch up on my favorite blogs.I caught a peek of that beautiful blue glass chandelier...must go read more about that. :)Kimberly
